He Received a Letter is an unfinished short comic about the disastrous aftermath of when Mona—a young woman who makes supply deliveries between distant mountain villages with her mother—writes a letter to her father informing him of her mother’s infidelity at work. She slips it in the mailbox on the eve of an important run that includes picking up life-saving medicine for sick residents of their isolated home town, expecting the issue to be addressed after the journey. Instead, her father climbs the mountain to confront them at the last rest stop on their return—when an avalanche crashes down on the argument. The comic features nonlinear storytelling, traditional line work finished with textured digital tones, and a sense of doom that underscores the cruelty of each character’s actions.
He Received a Letter was started in 2021. Several pages were taken to finish, some reached tight pencils, and some remained as concepts or thumbnails. I picked it back up on and off over the next few years, until in 2024 I ultimately decided I had outgrown the project and would not be finishing it.
